I have been browsing freecycle looking for unwanted diy or garden materials and tools. It's very disappointing, full of pointless posts like '2 old coffee cups, one with saucer, free to collect'.
Is there a better place to look for local reuse and recycle ?

Try Olio. It's an app. And doesn't seem to have the power mad local admins.
Some places have "local" FB reuse- recycle pages which work well with some items. The one here has very tight geographical boundaries. There is also Freegle ilovefreegle.org
- similar to Freecycle - but not linked to a USA setup.
I've recently picked up a few bits from Facebook Marketplace. Maybe not free, but for a nominal sum which keeps away the traders/timewasters. There seems to be a decent quantity of stuff there, especially building materials and similar.

The search if you're logged in seems to be better than if you are, but you can filter by distance/price/etc - I'd tend to stick with ordering by 'suggested' (which seems to find what you actually searched for, rather than random other stuff) but then filter it down. Beware that some people put the wrong prices on things ('free' listings are often not).
