My mother moved into a care home in April. Her 4 bedroom bungalow is now unoccupied, and I have it up for sale.
It's heated by electric storage heaters, really old ones too, but they work, and the rooms get really toasty.
In the winter months her bill was about 450 quid a month (and that's with just half of the heaters on !)
I was rather hoping to have sold (and completed on) the place before this winter sets in, but that's looking increasing unlikely.
The water supply is switched off (at the meter outside) (that's obviously a condition of the unoccupied house insurance anyway) and I've opened the kitchen and outside taps. Just a dribble came out.
I haven't drained the loft tank yet, but will do.
I've put a remote thermometer up there, near where the rising main water pipe passes along the loft floor (it's buried in insulation). My observations are that (currently) the loft temperature drops to a nightly minimum at 7am, and that figure is 3 to 4C above the outside ambient temperature.
Obviously the pipes will still have some water left in them.
If/when there's a cold snap, I propose putting the heating back on, in the rooms that are under the pipe runs, and opening the loft hatches (There are two, one each end of the building). That's going to cost 15 quid a day, so I hope not to have to do it for extended periods.
What is effect of the water freezing in the pipes, because the water pressure is 'relived' does the freezing take the route of least resistance, and move along the pipe, rather than bulging out through it, or am I wearing rose coloured specs ?
Any other ideas......?
