Silicone is fine to seal the cable entry point. And there will be a drain hole on the outside socket (you need to make the hole)

MK also do a grommet with stretched hole, designed to pass flat T&E through.

However, assume water will get in, and put a drip loop in each wire, so it drips onto the bottom of the back box (to run out of the drain hole), rather than being carried directly into the terminals. (Even if no rain water does get in, condensation will.)

I've never bought Masterseal because they haven't impressed me for the reasons you mention, and I don't need a socket which is waterproof in use, only waterproof when not in use.

Mine were from Wickes, but they don't do that type anymore. They might have been rebadged GET ones. I think they are IP55 when unused, but not waterproof when something's plugged in. I wasn't sure they'd last, but they have. They were very much cheaper than Masterseal.

Andrew M's post is incorrectly formatted. He's put his reponse in his signature block. Signature blocks should be stripped out of replies. Hence, you end up with nothing to reply to. I fixed it up by hand.

They stick out rather too far for my liking, so I carefully chiselled out the brick to recess it somewhat. And since it was inline with the skirting on the room other side of the wall - which is spaced off the wall - drilled a hole in the recess through the wall for the cable. Which I then fished out to under the floor.

something went astray as I posted it. I've just 'upgraded' to Windows 7 / Windows live mail so have to use Quotefix to unscrew things. When I pressed send it all dissapeared, and when I closed WLM the message was left in a separate window supposedly unsent. Doesn't help that the actual pc running WLM & Win 7 are in the office and I'm in the house running a VNC session to them from a Vista laptop. Technology don't you love it.
