hot water system

Hi,

We are moving our hot water system around (which includes a 1yr old remeha boiler, storage tank, and central heating) as part of a kitchen refit, and have had several plumbers in to look at it. They seem to be split 50/50 between "replacing it with a new combi boiler, so saving on pipework and tank space" and "setting the same system up in the new locations".

I don't seem to be able to get a clear idea of the pros and cons of each, and am hoping that someone here can help.

As I see it, the main difference is that, although the combi boiler is smaller/less space, it will only feed one hot water outlet at a time (so using two showers at once would be a problem).

Is it possible to get a combi that can deal with two hot water outlets at a time? From my limited research, the only ones I can find are the size of a washing machine!

The house is a 4 floor, narrow victorian townhouse - 8 rooms, 6 radiators and 2 towel rails.

You neglected to mention the number of showers, baths and basins, plus the number and ages of the inhabitants, which gives an idea of likely simultaneous demand for hot water. As the archives will show, it is the domestic hot water performance of a combination boiler that is critical, the heating is generally a relatively minor consideration. Assuming the house has a number of occupants a hot water storage system will give far better results.

Without knowing any more I would second the advice you have already been given. Don't fall for the sales patter, have the existing components moved.

[1] though this is debatable, as it depends on what the water outlets are for.
