Help with flooring job

Got a 50's bungalow with concrete floors covered with a 3/4" layer of dark red stuff looks like hard tarmac or some such.

Anyway, I want to lay a solid tile floor with an electric underfloor heating cable in the bathroom. Queastion is, can I remove the red stuff and tile onto the concrete or is the red stuff acting as a damp proof course as well as a surfacing material?

Any ideas would be gratefully received

Thanks Regards Philip

Sounds like you have a asphalt surface normally laid to deal with rising damp from the subfloor, was there any covering on top of this.

laying underfloor heating on the surface direct would be a problem I suspect ,if you could lay plywood first then it may be possible, the underfloor manufacturer will be able to advise

Alex Asfalt... yes that's it, couldn't rember what it was called. No extra covering on top bar carpets. There are bits where it's missing, where fireplaces have been removed etc and the concrete patch looks bone dry.

Probably not worth risking removing it if it's the only damp proofing
