Help needed to make golf trolley umbrella holder

I have an old golf trolley and wifey has bought me a new golf umbrella.

Every review of universal umbrella holders seems fraught with negative comments so I wondered what I'd got to make my own.

Thus far I'm nearly but not quite there:

gives the umbrella end a very firm fit and the loop at the end of the umbrella handle could possibly be used to help safely secure the umbrella.

At the moment I don't know the best way to attach the system to the square section handle. I have a collection of old aerial fittings and the clamshell type clamp nearly works but is not wide enough for the waste pipe and is a bit too wide on the handle's 5/16" square section.

I've wondered about cutting a 5/16" slot in end of the waste pipe and pushing that over the handle but it will still need a secure fixing.

I would prefer to not drill into the handle unless no other option.

Most commercial holders seem to have adjustments for the angle/tilt and again I can't help think that the right aerial attachments could work, though I'm not sure why I would want to vary from vertical.

Anyway - I'm looking for some inspirational ideas from the collective of uk.d-i-y short of buying a whole new trolley/golf bag system in which these things are incorporated from the outset.

Looking at your photo, I think you are going to need to clamp the floplast tube at the top and the bottom so that it will take a moment (a force tending to twist it away from vertical) in the fore and aft direction as well as from side to side.

Apart from aerial clamps, car exhaust clamps are available in a range of sizes but are perhaps stronger than you need. I think I would be inclined to get a piece of (say) 1/8 inch alloy or 12mm plywood, about 8 inches long and three inches wide. Position this vertically against the angled handle and fix it with bolts (by drilling the handle) separated as far as possible. Then have a u-bolt at the top and bottom, fixing the the top and bottom of the plastic tube on the other side of the wood/alloy sheet.

Is the objective, to get somewhere just to store the furled umbrella when not in use, or do you (also) want it to hold it in a useful position when open?

1) Go round and round a few times with duct tape. Keep the coil nicely wound so it looks like a mini-reel in two places around the pipe. 2) Cut a couple of short pieces of pipe and carve out the ends so that when pressed up to the holder piece, they look like a tee. Slot the other end so that it fits over the square steel tube of the handle. Clamp it all together with jubilee clips.

Jubilee clip will squeeze the pipe together at the handle end, may need to "dress" the clip around the metal; may need to use car body filler or similar to stop pipe collapsing.

Maybe snap-rivet jubilee clips to the square tube of the handle, then just retain the pipe in them.

Stuff a bit of foam pipe insulation down the tube to hold the umbrella handle tight(er)

other diameters available for 22mm and 28mm pipe.

If you are happy to more or less follow the line of the handle then why not zip tie it? At the least it will give you a feel for what you may wish to develop it into.

The Antiference No 1 clamp would work better the other way round. I have some new ones if you want one. But for several reasons I don't think they are really suitable.

Isn't that what I'm holding in the photo, labelled "Old Aerial Clamp"?

If so as per my OP it so nearly works but mine is just a fraction too small to grip the 40mm pipe whichever way I try it.

I guess you're not a golfer John. The umbrella has to protect me from the rain whilst I'm walking from hole to hole, marking my card etc and somehow not fly off with the wind, twist, pull the trolley over etc.

However, even the umbrella loops on the old bag are unsuitable (too small) for modern golf umbrella. I'll probably have to continue to rely on my Peter Storm jacket.

I wish people would consult before buying specialised equipment - my granddaughter had the sense to ask if I wanted an umbrella holder and that's when I started to look for reviews.
