Garden tao -400mm thick wall

Hi,

I'm planning on fitting an outside tap, but my wall is 400mm thick. If I start from two ends I am unlikely to meet in he middle - what would peopel advise? Use a long thin bit all the way through as a pilot and then shorter, thicker bits fro meach end?

Cheers,

Ben

Yes - that would work well enough - might help to avoid too much breakout, rather than trying to push a large bit right through.

I've seen 450mm long 22mm bits... but with a bit that long I can't see how you avoid bending it as it goes in. Do you need to start off with a shorter bit to stabilize the longer one?

Erm, 450mm 16mm+ drill bit would be the obvious choice.

Try bending a 22mm bit, it doesn't. 22mm is a bit overkill anyway, I usually pilot with a 12mm and then go up to to 20mm, then 25mm. Anything bigger is core drilled.

I'd drill a 16mm, maybe 20mm for an outside tap.

The only reason I was thinking of 22mm was so I could stick a 22mm pipe through as a sheath - do you reckon I can do without?

For what purpose?

If you want to stick a 22mm pipe through a wall you want a bigger hole than 22mm, 25mm would be the one you want. You'll also need a decent drill, or just stick the 15mm straight through the wall.

I see screwfix make a kit with a 10mm pipe. I could use that, and then use a 15mm piep as a sheath - and get away with drilling a less gynourmous hole, or like you say not use a sheath at all...

Either\or. Choice is yours.

Either that, or a long fatter bit all the way through. 400mm ain't *that* thick!

Screwfix do a 450mm long 25mm dia SDS drill for about 8 quid. I presume you

*do* have an SDS drill? I wouldn't even attempt it without!

================================== Consider what kind of wall it is before you start. A 400mm wall may need something special to get through it.

Yep - I have an SDS drill, but all my bits are a tad short for this task at the moment :-)
