Fridge thermostat

Me again!

We had John Lewis install a Fisher Paykel larder fridge when we moved 4 years ago.

I have had to gradually adjust the refrigerator compartment thermal settings and now have it *fully warm*. -0.5C This morning.

Large electricals only get a 2 year warranty from JL so is there any benefit in involving them?

I don't know that particular fridge, but replacing the thermostat is usually easy. There's probably a tube down which you slide the sensor and two or three push on connectors. It seems most manufacturers use one of a limited number of types.

Just be sure it's a larder fridge thermostat. Mostly, the less expensive ones are fridge/freezer as that's more common, and I had to return a couple sold as larder fridge types when they weren't.

If the contacts have stuck closed, a sharp tap /may/ be a temporary solution.

Apparently 5 years for this device. Expired August this year!

It'd only cost you the time of an email or phone call to ask, and to mention that 4 years isn't very long for a premium* brand, you wouldn't expect a like for like etc etc.

*I assume they were a premium brand 4 years ago; I only know I balked at the prices when looking to replace our fridge/freezer earlier this year. Oh, and they came then with a *5* year guarantee.

Go straight to Fisher & Paykel:

According to that page, there's a 5-year warranty.

Check the guarantee from John Lewis first. If they guaranteed it for 5 years then go to them first. You can always go to the manufacturer if not happy with JL; not so easy t'other way round.

They still sell them. Price now close to 3K!

Correct. I was relying on the JL main page.

In his final paragraph the OP said that it was only 2 years with JL for large electricals.

I wonder if you can argue that the fault started to appear well before the end of the 5 year period.

Worth a try. I have had to adjust the compartment setting previously as it was too cold.

My mistake Jeff. The invoice specifies 5 years. Sadly expired a few months back. I'll whinge to JL that the problem has been an issue for more than 6 months.

If you don't get anywhere with JL it might be worth contacting F&P. When my (expensive) Liebherr fridge-freezer went wrong at just under 4 years old, but still well outside the guarantee period, I complained to them that I'd bought it based on reliability as much as anything else. Liebherr effectively agreed that it shouldn't have failed and gave me

60% off an equivalent new fridge-freezer if I chose to replace it. I did, as I was impressed with their customer service. The new one has been fine for well over 5 years.

Worth a try although I suspect the fault is electronic and repairable.

The temperature setting is digital so I expect the sensor is a thermistor rather than a conventional thermostat.

Call out from FP is around £180 but does not include parts. Still cheap compared with a new unit.

Obviously investigate your warranty options but, if they fail, it isn’t unusual to find some parts are common across brands.

Fisher Paykel isn’t a brand I recognise but you may find they share parts with more common brands.

Consumer law gives you 6 years on high ticket goods, 1 year on low end. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll repair it, but maybe.

I'll see what the fitter has to say on Tuesday. The fault began to be apparent within the 5 years of the original warranty. Original cost was a bit over 2K.

The only thing that consumer law gives you for 6 years* is the right to sue a seller who won't repair or replace a product. It doesn't mean every "high ticket" item is expected to last 6 years.

*5 years for Scotland

Definitely - however, this was my experience with a TV (copied from my post a while back on uk.legal):

Indeed.

I suspect the fault is known. Repair man ripped out the circulation fan (moves cold air from the freezer compartment to the fridge) fetched and fitted a replacement from the van. Job done!

I'm not fully convinced as I don't see how a fan with only two connections can fail to the high speed mode and not be controlled by the separate electronics box. We will see.

No charge: confirmed by e-mail!

Thanks all for sympathy and support:-)
