floor slab - screed or not ?

Is is still OK with regs to not use a screed, just the concrete slab and floor self levelling / finishing on top (and insulation under the slab) ? If so, do you need insulation around the edge of the slab ? Also, can you embed a floor channel straight into the slab - services for island unit ? I cannot see the point in a screed unless UFH or similar. Radiator pipes will not be buried - I don't like that idea. Cheers, Simon.

The floor in my extension was done with insulation under plus insulation rounf the edges (prevents cold bridging) and then power floated
