Final Vulcan flights may be cancelled

The final flights of Britain's last airworthy Vulcan bomber may have to be cancelled because of fears a huge influx of sightseers will create havoc on roads around its home airport.

Glad I saw it a few weeks ago.

By sheer chance, I was at Waterperry a few weeks ago when it did a low, slow flight over. Beautiful clear day - and absolutely overhead.

It did a show at Old Warden today, the holding area, a few miles away, was over my house, as I knew it was coming I went out and sat on the roof to watch it. Most impressive.

When it aborted appearing at Old Sarum last month I was surprised to find tickets were still available for that seeing it was the last public display listed on the trusts website. Got back about 2 hours ago after a long but an enjoyable day with perfect weather. Whether the Rugby result had driven half of Southern England to drink so people got up late I don't know but the roads this morning had so little traffic we made better time than expected and got there early enough to be parked only about 50 yards from the control tower.

Hopefully will get a final glimpse of it on one of the final tours. G.Harman

Bottom line don't go to Doncaster. Catch her somewhere along the routes that will be published Tuesday.

Damn typical that the Northern Tour is scheduled for the 10th and I'll be working at St James Park from about 1030 at the latest.

Well, maybe if they can get a tenner from each person, then they can pay for it to be refitted. Seems to me that in this materiel world, people expect stuff for Nothing. Brian

Yes I saw it at the Yorkshire Airshow a couple of weeks ago. It was a brilliant sight to see.

It is the people with the knowledge and qualifications to maintain it that require refitting and money cannot fix that. The Planes were already on the way out before the Falklands raid made them famous again and that was over 30 years ago. An experienced technician in his forties then will be in his 70's now and though it is not universal age does bring in sight, dexterity and unfortunately memory issues.

And everyone was silent when it arrived.

Then much clapping, cheering and ooohing and aaaahing.

The shape... the sound...!

I anchored my boat underneath the display area in the Bay for the Wales International Air Show in amazing close up view of the old lady of the air (Typhoon was also pretty amazing so close)

BBC News, possibly Look East, yesterday described the appearance at Old Warden as the last public showing. Maybe they meant "one of the last", but that's not how it came across.

Last "display" possibly, rather than just a flypast?

Could be, I don't remember the exact wording. The impression given was that it had been the last chance to see it, but News broadcasts are not known for accuracy of detail!

Exactly, like in August BBC were saying it was the last opportunity to see 18 Spitfires flying, until September when there was an opportunity to see 40 spitfires flying ...

Isn't that a good practice to adopt irrespective of what may happening there?

That's what VTTST are saying.

I've seen it a few times and the display is usually described as 'legalised hooliganism'.
