Failed expansion tank - possible cheat ?

Given the faff it is to replace the expansion tank in a CH boiler, what are the drawbacks of just leaving a head of air in the highest radiator as a temporary fix ?

As a temporary fix its fine. However over time it may get absorbed into the primary water, and result in faster corrosion. You can add a replacement expansion vessel anywhere on the system though, you do not have to change the boiler one if its very difficult to get at. (unless its actually leaking etc)

A lot of hot air? Air locks? Steam? Brian

I expect the empty rad area would get wet but not get inhibitor, so a short term thing only.

If the radiator was the highest, then air should stay up high ...

Is there a downside to using one bigger than you think you need, I wonder ?
