Eyelevel Grill Fault

The gas grill on my Leisure Rangemaster 55EL has suddenly started flaring up and has flames licking through the top of the grill cover. I have had the grill apart but there is nothing obvious, does this sound as though the presure has risen, possibly due to a regulator failure ? Any ideas would be welcome as if I need to get a repairman round I want to avoid being riped off. Thanks, Martin

I am no expert, but the way I understood it is that simple appliances like grilles will have no pressure regulator, simplying relying on the meter regulator to be working reasonably well. If your meter regulator is playing around I think Transco are the ones to fix it - for free.

I may be talking complete crap though!

MARTIN ALLAN was thinking very hard :

ISFAIK, the only regulators are the ones which reduce the pressure at your meter. If that were not properly regulating the pressure, all of your appliances (fire, oven, boiler etc..) would be showing similar problems and you should get in touch with Tranco to sort it out.

If the only appliance with problems is the grill, then it must be the grill itself. It could be the jets and/or the air supply either way it needs the attention of an engineer and quickly.

No, but then the other burners would be seriously wrong aswell. I'm wondering if: a) The air intake is completly blocked so essentially raw (sooty) gas flames rise through the top. b) the supply pipe has corroded/ come undone so that it's essentially the same as (a). c) There is a hole in the fret through which some of the flame is going?

The injector might have gone missing but that it just about impossible barring direct sabotage.

Two visits (one to ascertain what's broken) and one to fix it should be sufficient. However there is no way any responsible gas fitter is going to leave your cooker connected in it's current state (Flames coming where they ought not has got to be ID (see FAQ)). Perhaps you might get one who is prepared to remove the grill knob and make out a notice and leave it connected.

Its fairly likely that the prmiary air intake to the burner has become blocked with fluff or whatever. Pull the cooker out, look in the area of the grill, there will probably be a long vertical tube coming from the burner to somewhere a foot lower. There should be some air openings, clean them out if they are fluffed up,also check if the injector is blocked.. joe

Thanks to all who replied. The grill is now fixed ! The fault was that the jet on the end of the supply pipe had fallen off, I didn't know it had to have one as there was still a brass fitment on the end of the pipe, (it must never have been tightened up properly from new)and luckily it had become lodged in the back of the cooker and was easy to find before I had chance to get an engineer involved. If you could get a proper parts diagram for these things I would have known straight away and wouldn't have had to bother you all. THANKS AGAIN, MARTIN
