The HSBC one is different you don't put your debit card into it, it's a standalone device locked to your account. But, yes, all the others are the same. I even have a BNP one from Belgium that works the same.

My wife seemed to get through batteries in hers in less than a month - during which time it wasn't even used. Do you think her habit of dumping this & similar things like remote controls into a basket, and then dumping heavy things on top, might have anything to do with it? (She doesn't.)

This rather misses the point I was making. Wifi calling works on my phone - but the phone is still expending energy trying to maintain a link to the nearest cell tower - despite the fact that it already has this reliable connection to the network via wifi calling. It is that waste of effort, energy, and battery life that I want to put a stop to.

Airplane mode should stop it searching for mobile signal ...

Thinking about what "Airplane mode" was intended to do, when engaged it ought to stop _all_ radio transmissions from the phone. That would mean no wifi calling (or wifi anything).

No - that's the total consumption. If you're going to do some numbers you need to use the correct numbers.

You are completely missing the cost savings and consumption of the EV. And to do this type of calculation properly, before you do the numbers, you also need to discount the cash flows and add a sinking fund.

On a reasonably modern phone wifi calling, roaming and other wireless connectivity uses a tiny proportion (maybe 1%?) of a phone's battery.

Originally it did, but now wifi and bluetooth (not sure about NFC) are allowed to be "on" in airplane mode.

No, I don’t need discounted cash flow or a sinking fund, I just need to know that I’d never get my money back on the £30,000 expended to gain the renewables dream. It’s better remaining invested.

But the OP is over-egging the cake.

Is his £85pm income from exporting electricity a best month figure, or from a yearly average, or what?

I ask because it’s very doubtful if he gets 1250 miles from 350kWh in winter from his EV. Approaching half that mileage (or double that electricity) might be more realistic.

And, it’s not always just about the cost.

Nobody looks at the ROI on their new car or kitchen upgrade. You buy these things because you can and it’s what you want to spend your money on. Also, whilst deeply unfashionable here, there’s the carbon footprint issue to consider.

I don’t need more interest on my savings, I need to reduce my children’s inheritance tax liability and If I can do it in a way that just *might* make life on the planet a bit better for them and their children, then it seems worth doing.

I've had a EV since April, up to today 2002 kWh to charge it (at 7p) so

6350 Miles, so 2.2 p/mile

It works out at an average of 3.17 Miles/kWH, which seems about right, Summer months each journey was about 3.6 to 4.2, at present they are 2.6 to 3.2

Never charged anywhere other than at home, until today that is, just about to do a 200 mile round trip, so, depending on the consumption I get on the way, I'll need to top up a little bit (hoping for about 20 kWh) to get back.
