Drain Question Follow up

I asked a week or so about drain depths and so on after I'd noticed a couple of paving blocks had dropped.

Lifted a couple of blocks and there's a tunnel, about 8cm diameter. Phoned Environmental Health and they reckoned rats, and offered to put some poison down for £35.

I can put the poison down, but I'm not too sure how best to fill the area so they don't go round/underneath and, presumably, up and in to my (and neighbour's) garden.

I think I'll just dig to a foot around the affected area and fill with something non-knawable, and concrete around, although any suggestions welcome.

Are there any fresh droppings in the tunnel? Does it smell of rats? If not, it is probably an old one. Fill in however you like: if rats want to get into your next door garden, they will. So long as they are not coming into the house, I shouldn't worry too much. Many are pretty well immune to the poison coated seeds, which amounts to just feeding them. As noted in an earlier thread, there is an electronic 'rat zapper' that you can use to trap and zap. Find out what is attracting the rats and put your trap there (in the garden, its probably the compost heap.).
