A few years ago it was said that Google of all people had developed a solar powered aircraft that could fly high above an area indefinitely and beam signals to wide areas being fed either from the satellite source or a ground link near the site. It was intended for natural disaster zones and the like where the infrastructure was badly damaged. It charged by day, and used batteries at night. I did wonder how big and robust such a craft might need to be, though to have enough power for all of that. Brian

I did wonder about that myself. After all they must own quite a large area due to the guy ropes. I feel sur some kind of smaller mast there with a mobile transmitter for the main channels might be possible relatively quickly. Now all the transmitters are run by one company you would think it should be relatively easy. Of course I believe the DAB services affected are run by somebody else who rent the facilities. Brian

We are not talking huge distances here though, are we? 50 metres perhaps should have been enough, considering the height of the mast it would not make a lot of difference. I don't know where the fire broke out of course, I'd have thought that anything like that would have been able to be extinguished automatically by filling the place with co2. No oxygen, no fire. As I recall, its not the most beautiful structure ever built. Whe it was new it had a nice white bit on the top, well just below the top. Brian

Its interesting but I plugged a discone into a tv here in the south, not far from Crystal Palace and had quite a few duplicateds of acceptable strength, so it might be interesting to simmply try that ruse .
