Dear All, I recently bought a used (sold as full working order) DW650 on eBay. I have= yet to test the machine, download the manual etc., but on initial inspecti= on, there appears to be something wrong with the front roller mechanism. Sp= ecifically, viewing from underneath, there is a spring, mounted on a lug, n= ext to the front roller carriage and this spring is sandwiched into an L-sh= ape, between the machine body and the roller carriage. I've only had a quick look, before going to work, but I would guess that th= e spring is supposed to be straight and that it is there to apply lateral p= ressure to the front roller, opposing the force applied by the tracking adj= ustment. In its current state, the front roller is free to "steer" left and right. I= would imagine that if the spring were pressing against one side of the rol= ler, the roller would tend to maintain its position and that adjustment of = the tracking would increase or decrease the spring's compression. Can anyon= e confirm whether this is the case on the DW650 or other, similar devices? = I have never used nor examined one of these things before, so it's all new = to me. Thanks, Jim.

They are as you say. The spring pushes the front (non-driven) roller against the track adjusting screw/knob so holding it in position. It is concentric withe front axle. Mechanism can get bunged up with dust, blowing it out usually fixes it. There are two springs BTW. One is for the tracking device, (above), the other is for the sanding belt tensioning device. This is inside the "box" that the belt runs round and is compressed by the lever you operate to change belts.
