His Royal Institution xmas lecture for kids. It showed something like a kid holding a bike wheel, spun up by electric motor then removed, while standing on a bathroom scales and his weight decreased. QED

Was his name Jason Arday? What in fact WAS his name. and where did he say it and is it on any record?

So a well known glorified thermocouple

Sounds about right to me

Indeed. It might have been CS Lewis. Or Tolkien

Green: adj Of a person, naive and guileless.

Nonsense. Laithwaite used to hold a non-spinning gyroscope out in front of him and declare how heavy it was, then he'd spin it up and let it precess while declaring how much lighter it had become. But he never bothered (in public at least) to do this while standing on some scales.

Idiot or charlatan? I don't know. Like many people, I suspect he eventually knew he was wrong but couldn't admit it. Maybe he was in love with Sandy Kidd.

Gyroscopes aren't magic and Newton's laws apply.

Louis Brennan understood them, Lit Motors does too, though only for the purpose of exploiting gullible investors.

His linear motors were real enough - and so was the electromagnetic gun which could very easily have killed an audience member at one of the xmas lectures when it turned out to be a lot more powerful than the target had been expecting. The target was two thick sheets of blockboard and the projectile almost went straight through both. People were sitting directly behind the target I was there in the audience. John
