Dab and Dob Channel for cables

My walls are plasterboard on dabs and dobs. I am planning some elecrical work as part of a bigger project that will involve some channelling for cables.

I had assumed the best way of making good would be to use strips of platerboard and dab and dob them back into place and tape the joints then skim. However, the builder who will be doing the work rejected this idea and said he would use just Carling and then a final skim.

Any views?

I will be cutting some back boxes into plasterboard on fixing foam rather than dabs, but the same thing goes really. There's bound to be some gaps around the edges and I'll just shove in some bonding (does anyone use browning now ?). Bonding is not that different to the PB adhesive used for dots and dabs anyway (well it does have those lightweight little bubbly bits in - what are they ?). A lot quicker than cutting PB strips, less time for builder, therefore cheaper for you ! Simon.

That's the norm, strips of PB have no strength

And for future reference, it's 'dot and dab', not sure if dob is even a word

I assume there's not enough gap to just fish the cables behind?

No it's Carlings new product - it puts itself on the wall and smooths itself. Surely you've seen the adverts? ;)

"Carling?, I'd rather drink a pint of plaster . . ."

Go with the builders approach (although I would use bonding then skim).

However you may be able to cause less disruption by cutting an access patch at either end of the cable run and sticking a cable rod or length of trunking cap into the void and poking it along, then using that to pull your wire.
