So what's the story on this ? My house has its original boiler - an Ideal Mexico - 20+ years old. It hasn't been serviced for a while, so I thought it would probably help the gas bill to get it done. The wife happened to mention this to a builder chum who comes in her caff, and he told her to be very careful about calling someone in to look at it, as they would almost certainly condemn it as inefficient, and in need of replacement. Have things on the eco-bollox front really gone this far ? I'm now disinclined to get it checked, as I certainly can't afford to replace it at this point, and it does at least work pretty well, aside from being a little gas-hungry.
When I do consider replacing it for something more efficient, I don't want to trade my stored hot water for one of these hot-water-on-the-fly combi things. Are 'traditional' - but updated and more efficient - boilers still available as 'drop in' replacements for a floor-standing type like my Mexico ?
