Chasing out mortar for repointing

Chasing out mortar for repointing .. what's the best tool? I've been looking for an 8mm chisel, but they all have such short handles!

For better tools look in Yellow pages for local professional tool suppliers, and ignore the "trade only" signs, walk in ask for what you want and offer *cash* Small firms can not resist cash on the nail.

Oh, nasty. Do you really need to re-point? What's the situation? With very hard pointing, it may be better to use an angle grinder as carefully as you can, bashing it out with a plugging chisel (which may be the tool you are looking for above), or a scutch and a plugging chisel, or an SDS drill bit, can damage the bricks rather badly. Try using a grinder to remove mortar in the middle of the joint, and then using a plugging chisel (or scutch, or sharp bolster). Sounds as if you've a PITA of a job on!

Actually it's not too much of a big deal. I just want to tidy things up a bit - nothing major. There's only a few places on the wall that need attention, I'd just like to know back the mortar and repoint to touch it up. It's a long story...

If I could find a long handled 8mm chisel I'd be laughing!

Thanks,

Paul

If you use a plugging chisel, then be careful if the bricks are relatively soft and the jmortar hard, as you will chip the arrises (or worse) as you try to dislodge the mortar.

A mini grinder and 6-8mm disk may be better

Plugging chisels are about 9" long, so not that short
