casting new petrol cap

I've broken the filler cap on my makita leaf blower, innards are OK but the crew cap has parted from the end cap, one on ebay has the same problem so it may be generic. I effected a temporay repair with a soldering iron welding the plastic but that failed after several fillings.

So I'm looking at casting my own and need to decide what to use and what to strengthen it with, Plan is to wrap the neck in cling film and cast over that, appearance is not important.

Polymorph (polycaprolactone). See

Plonk it hot water, get it out and mould to shape around the neck (no need for cling film, just lightly wipe the neck beforehand with Vaseline). Leave to cool and it's like nylon.

Cheapest supplier I have found is Tony Maguire Plasterers Supplies

Don't forget that it will need to breathe so that air can get in, letting the fuel out to the engine.

Thanks Peter, I was on their page looking at theor pu fast casting stuff.

I would order 100g to try but they won't offer royal mail delivery because it's hazardous!

There is a plastic valve under the cap that does this and this is intact, just needs a small hole drilled in the top of the cap. Many chainsaws have separate breathers now.

I have now made a crude petrol cap with the polymorph and it all seems good!

It deserves having another go because I hadn't appreciated how long it stayed workable and I entrained some bubbles, but the thread formed ok I will have to see how petrol proof it is.

Thanks again Peter.
