Carpet roll end: transporting in small car

I'm moving into a new house soon and will be looking to buy a new carpet for one of the rooms. I'll probably buy from one of the "sheds" (CarpetWorld etc.) but am thinking of arranging delivery and fitting myself.

Is it possible to transport a piece of roll carpet, say 4m x 4m 50/50 wool twist for the sake of argument, in the back of a small Fiesta-sized hatchback?

Would such a carpet roll fold over OK to fit in the back? And how much would such a piece of carpet weigh? Is it a two-man job to load and unload it?

Thanks Bruce

Why not get a set of roof bars? They can be really useful for occasional use with a small car. Apparently the weight of carpet is roughly 5lbs/sq.yd. antron.dupont.com/pdf_files/literature/leed_construction_waste_mgmt.pdf so you'd be looking at around 40kg for that size.

Definitely not! You'll wreck it if you fold it double and then roll it. It needs to be rolled round a stiff cardboard tube 4 metres long and about 15cm in diameter. The only way to transport it in a small car is on roof bars - and even that isn't very satisfactory. Can't you have it delivered?

Quite a lot!

Yes.

If you are buying good quality Hessian backed carpet then you will need to buy some rolls of underlay also - have it all delivered and fitted - they will fit the grippers around the edges etc and have the right tools and skill to stretch it into place and make a good job of it.

yes, but it'll occupy back and front, and probably the drivers seat as well if you dont restrain it.

yes. As long as you dont store it folded for days its fine, just for the journey. Done them that way, just check theyre not lying kinked when you get them indoors.

yep :)

Its straightforward with 2, but it is doable with one person - though heavy, large, and an uncooperative pita. If you dont mind a bit of swearing one'll do.
