last figures I saw using the IEC 60705 test showed the best still at about 65% efficiency and the worst below 45%
They average around 50% efficiency. 1000w will produce around 500w of heat into the food.
Doesn't the power setting just alter the cycle time full power is on/off per minute? eg two minutes on "defrost" is something like full power for 10 seconds, off for 50 seconds, and repeat.
If something is going to combust immediately, the power setting doesn't matter.

That is true. Mine pulses, a few seconds on and a few off, mark-space ratio depending on the power setting. But I believe not all behave that way - some run continuously on reduced power. Defrost on mine is
30%.But as I said up-thread, I was getting breakfast and wasn't fully awake, so brain, such as it is these days, wasn't functioning at full strength!
