Bare plaster, painting with Vinyl Matt. ( Was- look what I found under the wallpaper)

Well I'm down to bare plaster or at least SWMBO is, who did most of the scraping bless her heart.

The old plaster, approx 30 yrs old is a little powdery (it comes off white on your hand when rubbed over). There is conflicting advice re sealing the plaster,e.g PVA,or stabiliser, diluted vinyl matt, plaster sealer etc. There are some horrendous stories on some threads (not necessarily this NG) regarding bubbling of paint etc so I want to get it right first time. Scraping time is over :-) . Please advise. Regards Don

Diluted vinyl matt. Works for me on old and new plaster. One step from being just water for the first coat, then slightly thicker for second, then on to 100% paint/paper.

I have always achieved good results using watered down (10% water) emulsion on bare plaster. Leave it to dry well before second coat.

I always seal bare plaster with a coat of cheap white emulsion (own brand from a shed) and then put 'proper' paint on top.

The advice above is all good. Never use PVA on plaster that you are going to paint.
