bandsaw notes

  1. I didn't really think I'd be able to, but when I needed a 1mm shim of hardwood I was able to cut one with great precision.

  1. My large metal cutting bandsaw was in the shed and it was raining and it's a really awkward thing to move because it's unstable and all I needed to do was cut two pieces of 25 x 25 x 2 aluminium angle. OK I sinned. I cut them on the woodworking bandsaw. It worked beautifully. So I cut some more. But then when I cut a piece of 12mm ply the smoke alarm went off. The blade looks alright but when you run your finger along the teeth it doesn't dig into your skin. So I googled and found bi-metal blades that are supposed to be able to cut anything just about. So I bought two and later I'll try one. I wonder if I can just leave that blade in the machine all the time...

You probably can, but its performance on wood may not be as good as a dedicated wood blade.

I tend to find I swap between a fairly low tooth count 3/4" deep blade for re-sawing, and a much finer 1/4" deep blade for general detail work. The half inch blades don't often get a look in.

not too hard to sharpen the dull one. IME even crude sharpening is very fast & gets it working ok.
