There have been loads of different specs for GTX over the years. Cheap in the supermarket usually means it isn't to the latest one.
Bl00dy hell - I used to pay 7/6d a gallon for Duckhams Q 20/50 at the Motorists' Discount Centre. :-)

No, it's not the latest but it is a semi synth (as posted) so good enough for many.
In making my choice to purchase it, I compared the 8quid for 2L of their own brand semi synth to 10quid for 4L of branded and on this occasion, the balance came out branded.
It's still the same thing that comes out of the ground at just a bit more than water costs but these days the sulphur and phosphorus they take out goes back in with a metal trim.
What the base is doesn't matter as much as the additives. The spec of the oil is the thing to go for.

Get over yourself Dave, it was a heads-up, no extended debate required.
Thanks, Mr Netcop.

If you bother to look up the specs, please let me know if it fails to meet the requirements for your 30yr old SD1 or indeed your beemer.
I'd suggest you do some research into the additives best for older engines, and those which are no longer used on vehicles with catalytic converters. It a fascinating subject.
Oh - as are the types of anti-freeze commonly in use these days which aren't suitable for older cars.
But I'm sure you'll be happy just buying a brand name in a supermarket by price alone. Or do you just ask an assistant to choose it for you?

So you couldn't be bothered looking up the spec then, ah well, your choice.
Why would I bother for something I've no intention of buying?
I was merely pointing out others should do this if they intend doing so - as you didn't give it.
If you want to use any old oil in your car just because it's cheap, be my guest.

As you well know, it is not, "any old oil", you are just being a prick (and doing a damn fine job of it IMO).
You really miss the point, don't you?
Castrol GTX has had more versions than most have had hot dinners. As have all the other well known brand names. And semi-synthetic means precisely nothing.
Unless you're running some old banger you don't care about it you need to make sure the oil you buy is suitable for the individual application.
And if you think that's being a prick I'm happy to be thought one by the likes of you.
