I've had to chuck 2 perfectly good drills away because Argos can't be ARSED to get spares.

The answer is to buy better quality tools that do supply spares.
Setting up a spares service is expensive. They have obviously decided there is no profit in it. Likely because to the small volume of sales would make a replacement battery cost as much as a complete drill.
