Apex V Pent?

Pondering on the design, construction and of course cost of building a new shed at Handyman Towers 2.

What are the pros & cons of apex against pent roof?

A pent roof is easier to build and as long as the 'low' side is high enough for headroom, the 'high' side need only be a little higher to allow water to run off - but how much higher?

Does an apex roof have hidden benefits? Most sheds seem to be apex, so I wonder what the advantages are?

More width per unit ridge hight and a pleasing symmetry..

In my case the apex allows me to store loads of wood/ladders/copper tube etc out of the way. The sides are taller than me though.

Apex pretty, pent butt ugly.

Min angle depends on roofing material. For well sealed felt, just enough to shed the water

Looks decent.

Appearance mostly. I have an apex roof on my shed. It is (fake) slated to match the house. Also the fake slates last longer than anything else that is lightweight.

You only need one gutter and drain on a monopitch roof.

Shorter bits of wood are needed for an apex roof if that is an issue.

Mono pitch roof is higher than a apex roof of the same slope

Apex roof withstands snow loads better because of its triangulated construction.

Oh just thought of an important one. Assuming correct orientation, you can get twice as many solar PV panels on a monopitch roof as an apex roof. Plenty room inside for the inverter. Heh Heh.

Another alternative is to go nearly flat and make it a green roof, looks far nicer than any felted / slated / tiled roof.

Thats the biggest argument against a pent roof yet.

What the others said plus:

Apeex can go higher without PP (4m vs 3m) which might make a difference on a large building. Apex has steeper angles, and so can be tiled / slated more easily.

As I've become a fan of Coroline roofing in recent years - one new build and two re-roofs - I would be favour of pent as that saves on the cost of the ridging pieces. Coroline is in total only a little more expensive than felt, but scores significantly in ease of application and no cleaning up !!
