Another fence question

Prompted to ask this by the other fence question. Due to the way the gardens here align to each other, the fence is a patchwork of different styles (and heights) although it is mostly in an ok condition. It's not entirely clear who is responsible for each bit either, the deeds are not clear on this point.

We are planning to build a new(1), more uniform fence *within* our boundary, how can we ensure that there won't be any future disputes about the boundary line or ownership of the existing fence? Is leaving the original fence intact sufficient evidence to prevent this, or is there anything further we would need to do? The boundary of the plot is marked on the deeds.

(1)It's mostly for cosmetic reasons, if there are likely to be complications then we won't bother ;)

Only problem would be if neighbour then removed the current fence without replacing it. Wouldn't be obvious where the boundary was then. How about driving a series of metal reinforcing rods 2-3 feet long into the ground along the current fence line. Driven almost down to ground level, these wouldn't be noticable normally, but would be something you could point to as boundary markers if a dispute arose. They would be difficult to remove without quite a bit of digging.

That's a rather neat solution to any potential problems, Thanks :)

The site mentioned by Peter in the other post suggested taking photos, I'll do that as well :)
