Purpose

Estimate the net flooring area, calculated need, whole-box purchase quantity, and material cost from room measurements, box coverage, and price per box.

Methodology

Multiply each rectangular surface's length by its width, add the surface areas, subtract any excluded area, add a waste factor, and divide by the square-foot coverage printed on the box. The final box count rounds up.

Formula or decision basis

Net area is the sum of surface areas minus excluded area. Calculated need is net area multiplied by one plus the waste fraction. Boxes to buy is calculated need divided by coverage per box, rounded up to a whole box.

Worked example

For a 16 × 12-foot room and a 5 × 4-foot closet, excluding 15 square feet, the net area is 197 square feet. Adding 10% waste gives a calculated need of 216.7 square feet. At 19.8 square feet per box, the estimate rounds 10.94 up to 11 boxes, containing 217.8 square feet. At $50 per box, estimated material cost is $550.

Assumptions

Measurements use feet and areas use square feet. Surfaces are rectangular. Coverage per box is supplied by the user from the product packaging. Waste is applied after exclusions.

Limitations

Complex layouts, patterns, board direction, matching, damaged material, stairs, transitions, and installer-specific requirements can change the quantity needed. Verify the exact product's package coverage and installation instructions. Estimated cost excludes tax, delivery, accessories, underlayment, trim, tools, and labor. Large or complex projects may need a professional takeoff.

FAQ

Why does box count round up?

Flooring is sold in whole boxes, so a fractional box cannot satisfy the calculated estimate.

Where do I find coverage per box?

Use the square-foot coverage printed on the packaging or product documentation for the exact flooring you plan to buy.
