I've read all the interesting replies - but no-one has suggested taking the TRVs back to the shop and swapping them for 10mm ones. Is this not an option?
You need a new switch, easily available from a heating spares shop. It is easy replace it yourself. For now just jam something in it to keep it on

As others have said, a bottle of deionised water from any decent "car shop" is your easiest option. Less than £2 for a litre last time I needed some.
