Look at a product called Aquaboard, I saw it in my local tile shop. It's water proof and can tile straight on to it, which you can't with ply.
That depends on where you shop. I'm sure that that's true. Do they have to add calcium salts to buffer it back up to a reasonably pH neutral level?

But surely the average will be mainly influenced by the millions of low paid shop assistants etc. Not if it was very muddy.
