Lexan or plixiglass table tops?

Make a Leather topped replacement handle

Try a shoe repair shop and get the leather for shoe soles. Do a search for Tandy Leather, you can buy sole leather there.

Sanded ply from HD ?

I think it's great for utilitarian projects in the shop and shed. I have always finished with a coat of amber shellac or paint.
