If the bench isn't flat to within 0.000001" your projects will explode due to PVC dust in your 18 HP shop vac.
look for a book called "The Small Wood Shop" published by fine woodworking. It has an article for building one with Minimal investment.
A hire shop. You can also hire scaffold tower parts there, to make up a proper stairway platform, if you want. Colin Bignell
