Hydro Power - direct drive v. electrical

For some reason I have the urge to create a modern hydro power shop. I'm aware that you can convert hydro power into hydroelectric power, and then just plug in your machines, but the direct drive aspect has more appeal to me. Anyone out there know of a "modern" direct drive shop?

(The Not So big House) Naturally I'm looking at the shop to see how this translates to making my life easier in the shop. Since you have a chanse to start a shop from scratch, how did you determine the layout? Josie

Need Advice - Moving my Woodshop

I ditto what Art said; I moved my shop twice. Break down your machines as much as possible; if its a contractor saw, remove the fence, wings and motor.

Dust Collection Motor

I've just finished having a 500 sq ft shop built. It's on the back of my property with about 20 ft off the back of the property line. I dump my grass clipping behind the shop. I was thinking about just getting a motor and venting my dust right out the back vice "collecting" it inside ...

Best wall to deaden sound

There aren't a whole lot of continuous loud high-frequency metal shop sounds, just the occasional angle grinder and shop vac. Not like a wood shop. Anyway it takes only another inch to make a staggerred double wall.

OT Why doesn't the credit card company put your photograph on your card?

Do you really think that putting a picture of a dog - any dog...in fact, *anybody's* dog - is the same thing as putting the card owner's photo on the card? I'm guessing she's not using the dog to identify herself.

Building Custom Door

A cabinet shop may be able to duplicate a door for you but they might not have the equipment to create a quality cope and stick door with mortise and tenon joints. My experience with cabinet shops in my area (Upstate NY) is that they use dowel construction.

Personal Safety while Spraying

I can only assume you are referring to my small spraying jobs, at home, and not with reference to my friend's shop. I didn't say his booth was not filtered, nor did I say the drafting pulls his spray up and away from the piece being sprayed.

Ridgid 16 gallon vac

I am trying to decided which type of shop Vac to get. I looked at the ones at Home Depot. They seem to been very well priced for their power level. I also saw another at Costco. It was a real brand name shop vac. Still trying to decide. Let me know the model and how it is ...

Kettles

People's expectations have also changed because they (largely) are money rich and time poor, so taking something to a shop to get it fixed (if you could find such a shop these days) is a far less attractive proposition than just buying a new one.
