Nonsense. Laithwaite used to hold a non-spinning gyroscope out in front of him and declare how heavy it was, then he'd spin it up and let it precess while declaring how much lighter it had become. But he never bothered (in public at least) to do this while standing on some scales.

His linear motors were real enough - and so was the electromagnetic gun which could very easily have killed an audience member at one of the xmas lectures when it turned out to be a lot more powerful than the target had been expecting. The target was two thick sheets of blockboard and the projectile almost went straight through both. People were sitting directly behind the target I was there in the audience. John
