Wood floor installaion in Ranch Home

We own a 30 year-old ranch home with no basement or crawl space (all on 1 floor). We would like to remove the old white carpeting in the living/dining room and install soild oak floors. Would this be possible? I ask becuase friends keep telling us that we may have moiture damage because of no basement/crawal space. Any installation recommendations?

Thanks.

Check the manufacture install directions for the product you want to use. I installed 1700 square feet of flooring on a concrete slab on grade. Just followed the directions and all was well.

Are you on a concrete slab? If so, regular hardwood flooring is not recommended without extensive prep work. Insulation, vapor barrier, subfloor, etc that will raise the floor a few inches. This is a real PITA where other rooms adjoin as there is a big height difference. .

There are alternatives though. I used a pre-finished engineered wood floor from Mannington.

for more information. Step one is to put down a special plastic barrier, then install the floor as a floating floor on top of that. The material is 3/8" thick, very durable, and available in many styles. There are other brands, or course. Ed snipped-for-privacy@snet.net
