Why do circuit breakers go up for on and down for off?

Funnily enough, in the early nineties, desktop computers were just being introduced where I worked and we only had one PC between two people. I shared with a left-handed guy and got used to often using the mouse left-handed. I was using a mouse left-handed the other day, as I was helping my wife out and sat to the right of her and the computer desk.

(My second was breaking a stalled Meccano motor connection to a 12v toy train transformer. Took about another 5 years of physics till I understood how you get a massive shock off 12V.)

That was so the radio could work on 100V (or so) mains. Not necessarily US origin; we used to have 100V - 250V mains, DC or AC, before it was all standardised to 240V AC, 50 Hz.

I used to have a valve portable radio designed to be used on 100-250V, AC or DC, and also battery. It had extra valves that were only used when it was on the mains. The voltage dropping lead had failed and been replaced with a dropper in the cabinet.

Why wouldn't they run off the mains?

And why don't they have a voice activation like Alexa?

I have auto lights (they save a lot of time putting things down and picking them up again), but I don't understand the rest. I don't close my curtains, I don't see the point. A fridge needs no control, it just runs. The house thermostat usually stays the same, on the odd occasion I want to change the temperature, I press a button. Fake fireplaces look fake. And how do you "control" an outlet?

Some things like commercial buildings get annual inspections, mostly for fire safety.

I can elect to take risks if I want to. A non-GFD outlet 9 feet away from a faucet doesn't seem very risky to me.

The only Meccano motor I had came with no transformer, so I used batteries or my own transformer, which was safe. Never shocked me.
