Painting and renos...

Hi all,

This isn't so much repair as it is re-fresh...

I want to start with one room in my home. It is a small 10x10 bedroom.

It is currently white, with stained pine trim (kinda medium brown colour). There is blue 'sky' appearance carpet, although, it should be replaced... it is looking shabby. The furniture is wood (probably pine) stained to a med-light stain.

There is a good size window for the room.

I have no idea where to start looking for ideas, I am not a pro... ;)... Maybe magazines?? But realistic... I don't have thousands to spend on new furniture, just the basics.

I would probably paint the ceiling white, and the walls a different colour that would go well with the trim and existing furniture... I can paint the furniture (hammer tone or something?!? hmmm..)

Any suggestions to get me started would be great. The entire house is basic stained pine, not colonial trim, just plain jane trim. Whatever I do to refresh has to go with the existing trim... I don't feel like a complete reno.

Are there any other newsgroups that are good resources?

Thanks.

IMO, white ceilings are the best, but currently, lots of people are paing them a color to compliment the walls. I put a tint in the ceiling paint of the family room. I don't see any different, cut my wife likes it so then it works for me.

Wood trim goes with most any color so don't worry about that. Is the bedroom yours? kids? guest? If it is a spare room, go with a light to medium color. Dark will make the room look too small. Not all four wall must be the same color. One could be a contrast or could be wallpaper. Base the wall color on the new carpet, or consider putting down a laminate floor. You can get laminate from $1 a foot to $10 a foot.

Once painted nad the floor is done, you have to start with the "decor" such as curtains or drapes. They will add more color and interest. So will some artwork on the walls.

If the f urntiure is of good quality, you may want to just clean it up. I fit is mediocre quality, consider painting it.

Watch a few shows like Trading Spaces or some on HGTV for ideas.
