It's not comparing mills. The top is a model of how cuts can be used but the bottom is real sawing methods with plain sawn being the standard method. If you sell grade lumber then you saw what the specs are for thickness. One customer might want 4/4 boards and another might want 8/4. The goal is to make the most money you can per log. You want to pull good upper grade boards. Sometimes they're not the best and you might have to change your approach or handle it accordingly. Standard sawmill your basically sawing all the boards you can while trying to box the heart of the log into a 4x6
