flapper doesn't stay up (2025 Update)

My commode flapper is like the one in the following photo. When I push the button, the flapper will come up. However, as soon as I release the button, the flapper immediately goes down. Not much water goes down the toilet. How do I fix this? Thanks.

Make the chain shorter. So the flapper is out of the way of the current. This might take extra time if you cannt' tell where it was connected before, but the dirty/shiny part might be enough to tell. If not, trial and error.

Is this a new problem?

See how a flapper works. Lots of videos and this is one:

Flappers vary but to stay up for a time a floating time, drain mechanism is built in.

Micky is right. It is probably the adjustment of the chain or that little air tank is waterlogged. Usually there is a spec about exactly which link in the chain you hook to. Kohlers may be the worst about that. The one I used to have would fail if you were one link off in either direction.

The chain adjustment worked for me.
