Should the Broil element heat up only when BROIL is selected, or does it also heat up when BAKE is selected ?

I have seen both.
Mine heats in BAKE too. It's necessary to get food brown on top.

Some will use the bake element only during bake. Some will use both elements to preheat the oven and then the broil goes off and stays off. Some will will put 110 volts to the 220 volt broil element during the bake mode to radiate a little heat downward.
