It's in southern Virginia, and it blooms mid- to late May every year.

Yes, it's an azalea. Azaleas are in the genus Rhododendron. There are many, many hybrids falling into two subgeneri. Sunset lists over 20 different types of azaleas that are suitable for western gardens, with many varieties of each type. There are likely additional varieties suitable for eastern gardens. Thus, it is not possible to get the botanical name of the species you pictured without first knowing the variety.
