Cantaloupe - tendrils?

i am typing in l/c only, in case the jealous plant gods are watching...

first time I've tried melons in ages...going great so far, shhhh!...

question: plants have lots of eager tendrils. since plants are sprawling on the ground, what are the tendrils for?

your expertise appreciated.

Climbing. Don't stand still near them.

OK, concensus is climbing. But this plot is right in the middle of the back lawn, so not optimum for building a support. Will just have to let them sprawl; means no grass cutting in that area for "n" months. (Cute babies already forming!)

Also surprsed that your climbing ones would support the weight of the melons.

Thanks to all for help.
