Spot/Down lights - Mains or LV

Looking to fit some downlights in my kitchen - 5 in total (quite a small one).

In the past I have always used the low voltage ones, and never had a problem. Now I noticed that the mains ones are about the same price, but saving around £5 per downlight on the transformer. Not sure what the difference etween the two.

What are the pros and cons for LV and mains ones?

TIA.

Mains

Pros:

You save a little on installation cost Bulbs are slightly more commonly available

Cons:

You loose a fortune in replacement bulbs! You don't have the option of dichroic bulbs and hence they lights will project heat forwards.

SELV

Pros:

Fillaments are thicker and more robust - less likely to be killed by vibration Light output is greater per watt Light is "whiter" in colour Cheaper all round in the long run

Cons:

If you use dichroic bulbs, make sure the fitting is rated for them Need to take more care matching transformers and switches if you want them dimmable
