Skirting boards with channels for cabling

Two pieces of sawn 25 x 37. Nail or screw to wall one close to floor, the other a few inches higher. On top of the upper one, nail or glue a piece of moulding in your choice of design. Slap on a piece of hardboard/thin MDF/ply so that its upper edge is under the moulding. Gap between the sawn pieces gives room for cables.

I certainly CBA to rout metres of skirting.

The samples from Skirting World arrived today and the have the same problem. The faces of the samples are fine but the routed parts are not as smooth as I would have liked. Also, the top of the skirting is rough and shows a layered effect. That is, presumably, how MDF is made. (I intend to buy HDF skirting but the samples they send out are MDF.)

I will have to try sanding them down and see if they can be improved.

The HDF is supposed to be moisture resistant which sounds almost essential. The MDF samples look like the tops of them could absorb water quite easily.
