Recommend a wireless room stat

A friend has a room thermostat at the top of the stairs - not ideal for sampling the temp - and he is getting a bit infirm.

I would like to help him fit a wireless room thermostat that he can have in the lounge.

He would be wary of having his boiler wiring interferred with but I am thinking that we could replace his existing room stat with a receiver. Not sure if there are 2 or three wires - the house is late 1970's so I would expect 3 wires (?).

What would be a suggested kit?

How about a NEST? Should be a good fit - no programming as such, just turn it up and down as required and let it learn.

The control unit can be some distance from the relay - however, I am not sure if it depends on WIFI for its operation (does for internet control, not sure for local control).

Simple to use? ie I guess from your post that your friend is not into technology.

Maybe just a wireless remote dial stat? Honeywell do one

I would use a programmable thermostat. Very likely you would need to connect something to the boiler wiring, particularly if there is an existing programmer.

Not an electrician so cant advise but I got this on ebay for £33. A programmable wireless thermostat and more than happy with it. It allows me to have the thermostat in the room I am in.

I presume the receiver can go on the wall in place of the original stat?

You would still need to alter the boiler wiring to get a permanent live at the existing stat - assuming that there is also a programmer in the setup.

Of course - Thanks for that I hadn't considered the old timer on the boiler. I suppose it could be put on 24 hours and taped over.

And you still need a 3 core to the existing stat if that is where you want the receiver!

He may well have that if the existing stat is a mechanical jobbie with an accelerator resistor built in. But the Live will likely be the CH-on from the programmer rather than a permanent live. He would get away with that if installing a programmable stat, by simply leaving the programmer permanently set to ON, and doing the actual timing on the stat. But if he simply installs a wireless stat which is not programmable, and continues to use the existing programmer for timing, this may not work very well because the wireless receiver really needs to be permanently powered.
