OT: things that scared Bella the dog today

  1. The sound the mains testing plug makes when the socket is OK
  2. Me conducting the Band of the Grenadier Guards
  3. The Greenwich Time Signal
  4. The black chicken
  5. A phone ringing on Emmerdale

Black chicken? Is this the latest in genetic engineering to stop Mr Fox seeing it in the dark?

You can desense a dog by ignoring it when it behaves as inappropriate and praising it when it does the right thing. This of course assumes you take the role of the pack leader and it does not think it is the leader of course. Brian

Bill Wright formulated on Monday :

Our youngest of the two (three years old) is scared by any phone ringing, or a text message coming through - even when it is on the TV.

Her big, much older brother just takes everything in his stride.

No, she's an old and experienced dog, but she's nervous.

Quite right too, cannot abide by these new fangled things these days like postmen who don't look like postmen and now its even bad to piss on a lamp post or crap in the gutter. It might however be OK to piss and crap on a postman in a gutter but nobody has written this down in law yet. Brian

My father kept poultry but I never got involved in the pyschology:-)

Towards the end of his career, he would buy in a flock of *spent layers* (battery birds having exhausted their first clutch of eggs). Housed and fed for a few months they would come back into lay as well as providing a cheap lunch.

If you think about it, it's because he kills the weakest one. Thus the feed/egg ratio improves.
