Luxeon MR16 GU5.3 LED downlights. AC/DC question.

This weekend I came within 1 click of ordering a couple of LED lights similar to

got the better of me....you see I am looking at replacing some 20W Halogen lamps on a fitting in our utility room. This is about 10 years old and has a linear transformer....so 12V AC.

Curiously I note on the eBay listing these lights are quoted as 12V >>>DC

I've used them as interior lighting on the old Rover - the originals used

6 watt festoon bulbs and were totally useless. But I couldn't use larger tungsten in the fittings as there wasn't room and they'd probably melt if there was. So I modified them to take two 1 watt Luxons. Now enough light to read by.

At the time I bought them I had a choice of white and warm white. The white is very 'cold' and the warm white a bilious shade of green. I settled on the white.

Depends on application and how much you need to spend to acheive required result.

Lumileds makers of Luxeon LED, now wholly owned by Phillips was orginally partnership with HP, was the first to make a high power 1W+ LED. Now Luxeon is used like Hoover, generic title for all high power, big, LEDs.

Not all big LEDs are Luxeons and not all big LEDs labelled Luxeon are genuine Lumileds product. Several large manufacturers make big LEDs equal or better than Lumileds product and the Luxeon brand is now well enough known to have also spawned counterfeits.

Internally these MR16 style lamps will usually use a current driver and won`t bother wether its AC or DC and are usually fairly voltage spread tolerant. Or they could have saved about 20c of manufacturing cost and used a capacitive dropper.

Lack of attention to coupling LED to its heatsink can result in shorter lifespan than would normally be anticipated.

Genuine Luxeon white has L70, lifespan to 70% output of 50,000 hours, this ebay example 10K Hrs......

3W lamp that pulls 2W....

Dimmable to 50%?

Photos seem to indicate beam angle quite bit narrower than 40 degrees.

If its adequate for your needs at a price thats acceptable , its all good, it is unlikely to be a great example of LED lighting at its best though.

Did you try one of each?

I run 3W luxeons at 2W.

My guess is that they can't dissipate enough heat to keep the LED junction cool enough in something the size of an MR16, at any more than 2W. Luxeon don't make 2W LEDs AFAIK, so you'd have to use 3W ones (or a pair of 1W ones).

Even the electronic transformers output AC. It's just that it's at high frequency. They don't bother to rectify it.

Indeed I did. It was a year or so ago and things may have improved.
