I need to move a consumer unit about a metre down the wall so it is more easily accessible. The incoming power tails are buried in the wall and are almost impossible to dig out. . What is the safest and proper way to extend the tails.

Use a 'henley' connector block. Any decent electrical fitting supplier will have these NOT a diy shed. like this
Question 1 is will the extension take you over the local DNO's length limit for tails?
Point 2 is that tails buried in a wall won't comply with the 17th edition (unless using added mechanical protection) since they aren't 30 mA RCD protected. Therefore any extension cannot use the same wiring method - it would need to be surface wired, or done in SWA or MICC cable.
Better to avoid joints and replace the whole run in a manner compliant with today's regs, if practicable.
Thanks for the advice lads, I had a feeling that was the way to go. The tails in the wall come in on SWIG (25mm) so are well protected.
The new consumer unit will be compliant with the 17th Edition rags, RCCDS etc.
